Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I get started?
A: Joining is simple. Call your Sharing Gratitude Distributor or visit their website and sign up online. You have three options:

Option 1:  Become a Distributor by joining for free and retailing your way to a 40 % discount.  All you have to do is sell six 16oz candles through the Distributor that introduced you to this opportunity. Once you do, you receive your personal website page, back office tracking, training, support, and placement into our compensation plan.

Option 2:  Become a Distributor by paying a one-time $20 enrollment fee which activates your personal website page where you can tell your "why" to the world;  you get a 40% discount, back office tracking, training, support,  and placement into our compensation plan.

Option 3:  Become a Preferred Customer for a one-time fee of $40 which includes our 26 oz. 124-hour-burn-time, triple-scented candle, a Prayer Blankie donated in your honor, and  a 40% discount; sign up through your Sharing Gratitude Distributor. Or pay $22 for the candle and discount (with no Prayer Blankie).

If you would like to get started with product on hand, we’ll send you a starter kit for just $55 that includes tester fragrances and twelve 5-oz candles to use as demo products.

Q: How much can I expect to earn?
A: The amount you can earn depends completely on how much time and energy you want to invest. Distributors make 20% – 40% commission on their own sales as well as additional bonuses for the people they sponsor once they have enrolled two Distributors through the 2x2 7 in 1 matrix.

Q: What are the advantages of direct selling?
A: The freedom of being your own boss, the flexibility to set your own schedule and work as many (or as few) hours as you choose, and the limitless potential for success are just a few of the reasons people take up direct selling. And anyone can do it! You don’t need a degree or a background in sales or break the bank for start-up capital. Direct selling is an easy, enjoyable way to earn extra income.

Q:  When I join Sharing Gratitude and build a legacy business, can I will it to my family?
A:  Yes, you can leave your legacy to your children  or who ever you appoint in your will.  Just make sure your business is listed in your will with full details.

Q:  Is my business transferrable if I decide to sell it?
A:  Yes, you may sell your business with prior written consent from the company.  You only need to send a request for us to review.

Q: "I’m a new Sharing Gratitude Distributor:  How much inventory do I need to purchase?"
A:   First, remember that purchasing inventory and supplies is an individual decision and certainly not a requirement for you to begin your Sharing Gratitude business.  We recommend that you determine what activity level you intend to pursue in your Sharing Gratitude business and then, if appropriate for your personal circumstances, invest in a level of inventory and supplies that supports that activity. You may want to begin with product on hand, and purchasing the starter kit is a good way to do so.

Also, you have the opportunity to ask other successful Distributors, such as your Sponsor, for tips and advice on starting your Sharing Gratitude business.  Your Sponsor and others on your team will be happy to help you generate effective strategies for growing your business.

Finally, if you change your mind or decide that a Sharing Gratitude business is not for you, you can take comfort in knowing that the Company will repurchase, at 85 percent of your original net cost, any unused, unopened products, and currently marketable products and literature, provided such items were purchased by you from the Company within one year prior to return.

Q: I do not like to sell. Can I still be good at this?
A: At SG, it’s all about relationships, not hard sell tactics. If you enjoy socializing and sharing candle products with friends and family, you have all the qualifications you need to succeed.

In fact, the complete lack of sales pressure and the simplicity of our products are the main reasons so many customers decide to become Distributors. They find themselves enjoying a party experience instead of having to sit through a typical sales presentation and suddenly realize, “Hey--I can do this!” Even brand new Distributors feel comfortable and confident right from the start.

Q: Why should I join The Gratitude Candle Company instead of another direct selling company?
A: Everything SG does is based on our core virtues of Simplicity, Authenticity and Value. And, SG is serious about authenticity in other ways as well. Unlike most other direct selling companies, SG encourages Distributors to express their individuality and operate their businesses in ways that work best for their families and their lifestyles.

Q: What other benefits does SG offer to Distributors?
A: Every SG Distributor gets a free, personal website page for the life of their business, a free back office, no inventory to manage, no credit card fees, and free shipping on orders over $300.00

Q: What kind of support and training does SG provide?
A: At SG, Distributors are truly sponsored and mentored, not just recruited. Support comes from your Sponsor and your up line (your Sponsor’s Sponsor).

Q: Will I be obligated to meet any sales quotas?
A: Not at all. You’re free to schedule as many or as few parties as you like, direct sell one-on-one, and sell as much or as little product as you like. You can also act as your own Hostess and Distributor. In order to maintain “active” status (meaning you are still entitled to earn commissions from the 2x2   7 in 1 matrix plan) when you reach the Ruby level - or within a year of sign-up - whichever comes first,  you need to sign up 3 Preferred Customers and continue to do so during each calendar year - and that's only to receive your commissions earned at Ruby level and above. You will always be able to receive commissions on your Silver and Gold levels after initially qualifying.   However, at Sharing Gratitude you’re always welcome, active or not.

Q: What if this just doesn’t work for me?
A: At SG we realize that, even with the best of intentions on both sides, not all partnerships are meant to be. As a Distributor or a Preferred Customer you’re free to leave SG at any time. There is no cancellation penalty.

Q: Can a group sign up as a distributor?
A:  Yes. Here's how: Let's say your church wants to buy a distributorship and do fund -raisers for their mission trips. The church would sign up and everyone would sign up directly under their church. A school can do the same thing; it works the same way. Additionally, if a group of individuals want to buy a distributorship and work together, that is fine, too; they will just need a tax ID # for their group.

Q:  Does the board ever split like some matrix MLMs?
A: No. There are seven boards with 2 levels (cycles) to complete in each board. After completion of every odd cycle, you receive money; after completion of every even cycle, you receive free products

Q: Can I sponsor someone overseas?
A: Not at this time, but we're working on it. The problem lies primarily in the cost to the company for shipping the candles since Distributors are not charged shipping and handling. We are looking at the possibility if the Distributor would choose to donate his/her earned candles back to the company to be sold with all money going to the children's hospital.

Q: Can I sign up by fax?
A: Some companies do allow Distributors to sign up by fax. In an electronic age, more and more courts are recognizing that we must honor the way the commercial world actually works. Facsimile signatures are legal. However, the best approach is to have an original, signed Distributor Agreement on file at our home office; that is why we ask you to do both.

Q:  Why do I have to pay sales tax?
A: This is a long complicated story and not without ongoing legal dispute. Unlike mail order firms which are immune from sales and use tax, direct selling companies are viewed by state officials as having "nexus" (sufficient contacts in a state for sales tax purposes). Their reasoning is based on the fact that Distributors of direct selling companies actually promote the product and opportunity, and conduct opportunity meetings and training meetings in the states in which they live. Consequently, their sales are not considered to be in the same category as mail order sales. Distributors must either obtain resale tax licenses and take care of the taxes themselves, or the company will collect and remit sales and use tax.

Q: If I’m an independent contractor, why are there rules regarding my conduct?
A: From a legal standpoint, you are an independent contractor because the company does not tell you when, where, and how to perform your tasks. If it did, you would be an employee. Adopting guidelines on ethical issues, consumer legal safeguards, and general rules for fair competition among Distributors does not negate independent contractor status. Independent contractor status generally means that individuals are liable for their own income taxes, unemployment insurance, worker’s compensation, etc. In 1982, the federal government specially recognized independent contractor status of direct sellers, and many states have followed suit with specific legislation.

Q: Is it appropriate to pay commissions on sales aids?
A: No. Commissions are only paid on products or services that are available to be sold or used by consumers. Sales aids do not fall in that category because they are merely tools for Distributors. Payment of commissions on sales aids would be criticized as a payment of "head hunting fees" for the mere act of finding other Distributors, as opposed to sales to users of the company’s products or services.

Q: Which is more important: sponsoring or selling?
A: They are both important. An army of Distributors that sells nothing will produce no commissions. On the other hand, recruitment is very important in a business where 90 percent of the Distributors are part-time, and productivity per Distributor is relatively low. A balance is the key.

Q: Must companies be registered in every state?
A: Actually, a number of states have multilevel distribution statutes that require registration. In addition, most companies will be registered to pay sales taxes throughout the country. However, most network marketing companies will only register to do business as a foreign corporation doing business in those states in which they have a physical presence such as manufacturing facilities, warehouses, offices, or employees. The corporate laws of most states provide that a company is not "doing business in the state" merely because it sells through independent Distributors in that state. SG has a valid business license in the county in which our business is located.  We pay sales tax to the State of Tennessee.

Q:  Who is Glenn Turner?
A: In the 1970s, Glenn Turner was the man behind  companies called "Dare to Be Great" and "Koscot International". Dare to Be Great sold motivational programs and Koscot sold cosmetics. Many people in the industry who knew Turner have remarked that he was one of the most charismatic individuals and motivating leaders ever to come along in the industry. Many company executives of subsequent network marketing companies came from the Turner programs. Regulatory agencies and courts held that Dare to Be Great and the Koscot programs promoted the opportunity rather than the product. As a result of extensive litigation, those companies were forced out of business in many jurisdictions. In the aftermath of those cases, almost every state adopted pyramid statutes. Later in the 1980s, Turner resurfaced again in association with Challenge to America, another motivational type program. That program also faced difficulties and even a criminal conviction in Arizona.

Q:  What is the Amway FTC decision?
A: This is the landmark decision for the network marketing industry. In 1975 the Federal Trade Commission charged Amway with violating FTC rules. After four years of litigation, Amway prevailed when an FTC administrative law judge ruled that Amway was a legitimate direct selling company and not an illegal pyramid scheme. The basis of the decision is recognition of Amway’s (1) ten retail customer rule, (2) 70 percent rule, and (3) buy-back policy. The industry owes Amway a debt of gratitude. The industry would not likely exist if Amway had not prevailed.

Q:  What is an "at cost" sales kit?
A: Almost all states’ pyramid statutes prohibit the payment of an investment for the right to be involved in a multilevel type business. Many of the states specifically hold that the purchase of an "at cost" sales kit from a company is not considered to be an investment. Sales kits typically cost between $15 and $75. The term "at cost" means that the sale of the mandatory sales kit does not generate profit for the company. Profits for the company and its Distributors should come from the sale of the company’s products and services. In order to be involved with us, you pay a one-time $20 to activate your personal website page, back office, training and support. Then you order your products at a 40% discount and agree to abide by the 70% rule. Your $20 sign up fee covers the 70% rule until you reach the Ruby level.  Upon reaching Ruby, or within a year of sign-up, whichever comes first,  you will need to sign up 3 Preferred Customers and continue to do so each calendar year.

Q:  Is it okay to pay commissions just for recruiting new Distributors?
A: Absolutely not! This is what is referred to as "head hunting" fees and is commonly referenced as an element of pyramid schemes in court cases. Commissions should be paid only on the sale of company product or services. We provide the service of hosting your personal web page, back office, retail site, and marketing site for a one-time $20.00 fee for the life of your business as long as you abide by the 70% rule. Again, your $20 sign-up fee covers the 70% rule until you reach the Ruby level.

Q:  Do attorneys general approve marketing programs?
A: Although government agencies in some foreign countries may issue advisory opinions, no attorney general office in the United States gives its stamp of approval to an MLM program. Inquirers are always told to review the appropriate laws. In fact, nothing will bring the wrath of an attorney general’s office more than a claim by a Distributor or a company that the program has been approved by the attorney general.

Q: What is the company name and what type of company is it?
A: The full name of the company is "Sharing Gratitude/The Gratitude Candle Company" which began marketing our flagship product of organic, lead-free candles in boutiques in the Tennessee, Missouri, and Kentucky area in 2007. After success in marketing these candles, founder Jennifer Ballenger became inspired to expand the business to include a direct selling Distributorship component that would not only allow others to distribute the candles (thus enhancing their personal income) but to do so while donating to the worthy cause of helping find a cure for cancer in children and supporting families of children with cancer. We refer to the company simply as "Sharing Gratitude".

Q: Is Sharing Gratitude/The Gratitude Candle Company An MLM PYRAMID SCHEME?  A personal answer by SG Founder, Jennifer Ballenger.

A: First let me say that anyone who says we are a pyramid or money game really needs to do some homework. Let me explain:

There are some real strange websites on the Internet that claim all MLM (Multi-Level Marketing) companies are pyramid schemes. Eventually you will run into someone who says, “oh yeah, one of those pyramid schemes“. I am here to armor plate you and tell you how to handle the question!

WHY PYRAMID SCHEMES ARE SHAPED LIKE A PYRAMID!

A Pyramid Scheme is shaped like a pyramid because they run out of suckers and the deal collapses. Almost any multi-level compensation plan can be used for a pyramid. A pyramid scheme sells products of no or little value at inflated prices; it also collects a lot of money so that a lot of money flows through the pyramid scheme. The last people to get in the business make very little or no money because there are not a spare 100,000 or million people dumb enough to feed the bottom of the pyramid scheme. “Get Rich Quick” is the battle cry of pyramid schemes! We could say Darwin’s Theory holds true and the smart survivors stay out! The pyramid scheme starts collapsing and the participants complain to the law (usually too late).

WHY A LEGITIMATE MLM COMPANY IS A DIAMOND

The answer is no real MLM company is a pyramid. The definition of a “real company” is one that customers buy valid goods or services from. I have seen the down line reports of over 100 reputable companies selling valued products and services. Looking at the levels of distributors in a print out shows that the company’s down lines look like a diamond! In fact some look like a skinny turnip!

Multilevel/Direct Sales marketing is a popular way of retailing in which consumer products are sold, not in stores by sales clerks, but by independent businessmen and women (Distributors), usually in customers' homes. As a Distributor you can set your own hours and earn money by selling consumer products supplied by an established company.

In a multilevel structure you can also build and manage your own sales force by recruiting, motivating, supplying and training others to sell those products. Your compensation then includes a percentage of the sales of your entire sales group as well as earnings on your own sales to retail customers. This opportunity has made multilevel marketing an attractive way of starting a business with comparatively little money.

We also hear the charge from critics saying, “only the people at the top make any money.” As soon as they say that I know they are showing they know nothing about MLM or Direct Sales. They probably haven’t done any more than buy a distributor kit and then sat and watched TV. There are plenty of companies where people that were not in the company from the first made big money! In fact in one company where I was the top earner - I was at the bottom of the heap! I was 300 levels down in the company and only 6 generations made any money off of me. The original Distributors that had started with the company had all left. I know lots of similar cases where the top earners were not at the top of the diamond.

Anyone can pass anyone in our pay plan; this all depends on their drive and effort.

How to tell the difference between a legitimate business and a disguised pyramid scheme

Pyramid schemes seek to make money from you (and quickly). Multilevel marketing companies seek to make money WITH you as you build your business (and theirs) selling consumer products. Before you sign up with a company, investigate carefully. A good way to begin is to ask yourself these questions:

1. How much are you required to pay to become a Distributor?

If the start-up cost is substantial, be careful! The start-up fee in multilevel companies is generally small - but can still range from $50 to $500. For the start-up fee, usually a sales kit is sold at or below company cost. These companies want to make it easy and inexpensive for you to start selling. Pyramid schemes, on the other hand, make nearly all of their profit on signing up new recruits who do not make any commission for signing others up to become Distributors. Therefore, the cost to become a Distributor is usually high. CAUTION: PYRAMIDS OFTEN DISGUISE ENTRY FEES AS PART OF THE PRICE CHARGED FOR REQUIRED PURCHASES OF TRAINING, COMPUTER SERVICES, PRODUCT INVENTORY, etc. These purchases may not even be expensive or "required," but there will be considerable pressure to "take full advantage of the opportunity." You can become a Distributor in Sharing Gratitude/The Gratitude Candle Company with only a one-time $20 investment which covers your website for the life of your business. You also get a 40% discount for life. You get a personal website where you can upload your story and tell your experiences with The Gratitude Company (this alone is valued at over $10 a month). You get a free Back Office Suite where you can track your business. THESE IS NO MONTHLY REPEATED COST!!! This is hardly taking someone’s money and giving them nothing in return!)

2. Are the company's products sold to consumers?

IF THE ANSWER IS NO (OR NOT MANY), STAY AWAY! This is a key element. Multi-level marketing (like other methods of retailing) depends on selling to consumers and establishing a market. This requires quality products, competitively priced. Pyramid schemes, on the other hand, are not concerned with sales to end users of the product. Profits are made on volume sales to new recruits. who buy the products, not because they are useful or attractively priced, but because they must buy them to participate.

Our consumers are our Distributors, who do not have a quota they have to buy! They buy only what they will use for themselves or sell to make retail profit. No purchase is required with us. Inventory purchases should never be more than you can realistically expect to sell or use yourself. You buy our 16-oz candles for $12 - then retail them for $20 to $22. That is a profit of $8 to $10 on every candle sold. The average price on a comparable candle is 24.99 to $27.99. One out of every three homes burns at least 2 candles a month. If they buy one of our same quality, they would spend about $22 x 2= $44.00 a month or $528 a year. With us they would only spend $288.00 a year - saving the average consumer $240 a year on their candle purchases, and with us $24 would be donated to children's cancer research - and as customers become Distributors to get the discount, they also help our cause and receive free candles and money for continuing our Gratitude Candle Mission. What could anyone possibly complain about?  There are no crazy qualifications to get your 40% discount unlike other companies who make you buy hundreds of dollars in products to get a discount.

In addition, we have a Preferred Customers Plan where customers buy a candle, get a 40% discount and do not belong to the pay plan. We have many customers who do not build a team, and that is their choice.

In order to be included in our pay plan, you only have to share this opportunity with just two people, and you are qualified for life to receive commissions.

So as you can see we are not a pyramid scheme or money game.

That’s right: No pyramid scheme shapes here! We are a Diamond...

Please look for these Warning Signs of Fraud:

  • Pressure to sign a contract quickly and agree to pay a large sum of money before sales claims can be investigated or legal advice obtained.
  • Promises of extraordinarily high or guaranteed profits. (We make no guarantees)
  • Claims that profits can be achieved easily (We know all success requires hard work)
  • A required initial fee which greatly exceeds the fair market value of any products, kits or training, website, and fees.
  • A large fee payable before you receive anything in return
  • Evasive answers by the salesperson or unwillingness to give disclosure documents required by law. (Ours will be on our website)

These are only warning signs of the most obvious frauds. An independent investigation is necessary in any case. A fraudulent salesperson may be prepared with glib assurances and authentic-looking documents. Remember, if it's worth your money, it's worth your time to investigate.

Last but not least, consider this:

CORPORATE AMERICA is the largest PYRAMID IN THE WORLD. I say this because the corporate American company is structured as a money pyramid - with the CEO at the top and all the way down to the guy who sweeps the floor and turns out the lights at night. Whatever level you are on, you look up to the next level, and there is this big person holding you back. He is protecting his spot and is not going to let you move up and take it.

People thinking that network marketing is a pyramid scheme is beginning to change. It has become such an incredible business model that corporate America is starting to get in on the act. Do a little research for yourself and you will find that most of fortune 500 companies are starting to market their products this way. The greatest part of this type of business model is if someone is dishonest, it does not work - the program just falls apart.

Our business model works like a pay-it-forward plan building a chain. I sell you something you need and use up and buy more (our candles). Then I also help you get a customer to buy, use up, and buy more - and then everyone benefits up the chain equally.

Corporate America loves this concept because it works so well and moves products much faster than the traditional ways of marketing. For the big companies as well as the individual, it is a fantastic way to leverage their time and money for bigger profits shared by everyone involved. Sure there are some bad apples out there that do their best to make a scheme out of the process so the profits only come back to them. We are not like that! $1 of every 16 oz candle bought wholesale or given away is donated to children's cancer research and a portion of distributorship fees collected is used to continue our mission of providing prayer blankies for kids. Network Marketing can and does improve every aspect of people’s lives, and it is worth your time to really learn about what it is and how it works. It is a system that shakes out the bad apples and really helps everyone involved.

Hence - Sharing Gratitude and The Gratitude Candle Company

Let's look at Sharing Gratitude and the Gratitude Candle Company... Forget the pie in the sky and big hype for few minutes and look at some of the facts:

Has the company been in business very long?
Yes - three years for The Gratitude Candle Company.

Is the company publicly traded?
NO - Stay away from the publicly traded company because they are swayed by the share holders. This becomes very unrealistic in a people business. It is the people that get the short end of the stick in a publicly traded company that is swayed by the stock market.

Are the people connected with the company the kind of people you would like to be connected with? What are their values? Are they like yours?
Please check our mission statement on our website. We want you to join us making a living by making a difference not only in our own lives but in the lives of others, as a result God will bless our mission.

These are the things I would ask myself if I were looking at the Gratitude Candle Company as business.

Other questions to ask:

When looking at any new business opportunity, you've got to ask yourself these questions:

  • Is the product unique?
  • Does it have vast market appeal?
  • Is the company guided by a management team with a proven track record?
  • Is the compensation worth my effort?

With The Gratitude Candle Company, the answer is “yes” to every question.

  • The Gratitude Candle Company product is truly a unique, beneficial product with universal market appeal: the triple-scented lead-free wick, organic, powerful formula
  • Candles enrich and enhance the lives of everyone, so there is, indeed, huge market appeal. The company itself is guided by GOD. The plan is easy to understand and very, very rewarding.
  • With the latest addition of the Preferred Customer Program, customers can get a 40% discount, and the company gives away a distributorship to someone who wants to build a team and gives them a 40% discount, too.

The timing is perfect - both from a billion dollar candle industry and the business potential.

Now is the time to take advantage of this extraordinary opportunity. We have a remarkable product line with universal appeal. We have leadership that understands the business from the inside out - and a compensation plan that recognizes and rewards every effort you make.

New opportunities require a new way of thinking. The Gratitude Candle Company is an exceptional, innovative product designed to change the landscape of the candle industry forever. The Sharing Gratitude/Gratitude Candle Company business is an equally innovative opportunity that will change the landscape of network marketing/direct sales.

If you‘re still not sure about the answer to "Is this a pyramid scheme?", read on:

Below, you'll find some compelling quotes taken from Fortune® magazine and then, you'll read a snippet from a government web site aimed to educate the public about the difference between network marketing and a pyramid scheme.

Corporate America Embraces Direct Sales

In a recent issue of Fortune® magazine (the one with Bill Gates on the cover) you'll find an interesting article focusing on the sputtering economy, and the independent contractors (distributors) who are revitalizing the US retail industry through the art of Direct Selling. Here are a few key paragraphs that are particularly interesting:

"Call it the age of direct selling. With its emphasis on personal, one-on-one relationships between distributor and consumer, convenience, and a high degree of consumer education, the industry may be tailor-made for today's consumer - and company.

"The result: The industry, with U.S. sales of $28.7 billion in 2002, up 7.5% from the year before, has become a magnet for both corporate behemoths lured by its efficiencies and dozens of entrepreneurs attracted by the lower cost of market entry...

"Last year, for example, Warren Buffett's biggest purchase was The Pampered Chef...Hallmark's Binney and Smith is launching its own direct-selling company, called Big Yellow Box by Crayola...

"Most direct-selling businesses now employ a multilevel business model, in which distributors earn money on their own sales as well as the sales of those they recruit (called the 'down line') and the sales of individuals sponsored by their personal recruits. That's different from the single-level approach, in which you only make money on your own sales. In 1990, about 20% of the Direct Selling Association members in the US used the multilevel plan; today, it's about 80%...

"Although today's economic times offer a variety of challenges, solutions are available for those individuals willing to seek them out. With direct selling companies providing alternate avenues for income generation, more and more people are able to give their current jobs the pink slip."

- Fortune®, The Power Issue, Vol. 148, No. 3

So, Are Network Marketing Direct Sells Really Legit?

After seeing that corporate America is quickly embracing the methods and strategies of network marketing (direct selling), it's important for many people to make the differentiation between a legitimate marketing strategy used by companies releasing legitimate products, and illegal pyramid schemes that scam innocent people.

To quote a government web site (Division of Consumer Protection):

"Multi-level marketing companies differ from pyramid schemes because they are usually legitimate business opportunities. The sale of legitimate products is what distinguishes multi-level marketing operations from pyramids. Pyramid schemes want to make money from you, not the product sales."

Pyramid Schemes vs. Multi-level Marketing

Pyramid Schemes usually do not involve the actual sale of products to anyone, and people are often lured into the business with false promises. They also are forced to buy products and pay a lot of money to get started.

It's wonderful to know that The Gratitude Candle Company meets every criteria for being a legitimate marketing company.

We believe we will be THE NEXT NETWORK MARKETING GIANT.
