Make A "Prayer Blankie"

Please send your
Security/Prayer Blankie to:
Sharing Gratitude
107 River Birch Lane
Medina TN. 38355
Every child loves a special "Blankie" to cuddle with, to drag around, to be wrapped in when sheltered in her parents' arms. Together we can be Angels Undercover - making Prayer Blankies for children who are in hospitals. Our goal is to have at least 3100 blankets completed by early December 2011 for distribution to the children and babies before Christmas.

How To Finish a Fleece Blanket

On this page are instructions for making fringed, tied, and knotted
fleece blankets that require no sewing.
You will also find instructions for making fleece blankets that require sewing.
The no-sew methods are perfect for kids who want to help kids

The following methods will result in a
nice looking, neat and cuddly blanket.

Use at least 1 yard per blanket if you
are making older child and teen sized blankets. If you use less than that
and then fringe the edges, you have a very skinny blanket.

One yard of fleece cut in half will make two 30" x 36"
blankets - just the right size for baby blankets.
(Most fleece is approximately 60" wide.)

Please cut off the selvage on edges of the fleece
(that's the bumpy, wavy edge) before finishing the blanket.

You don't have to knot the fringe - a neat plain fringe
looks very nice without knotting.

No sew fleece blanket instructions:

Directions for a "no-sew" hand tied fleece blanket

No Sew Fleece Blanket

Fabric needed:

at least 1 1/2 yards of 2
coordinating fleece fabrics - preferably one child print, one solid

1. Lay out the 2 pieces of fleece on on top of the other, edges even.

2. Trim the selvages on all 4 sides of fleece. (Cut through both fabrics at one time.)

3. Cut a 6 inch square from each corner of the blanket.

4. Cut strips 1" wide and 6" deep around all four sides of the blanket.

5. After the strips are cut, join the two pieces of the blanket together using a overhand knot - tie the front and back fringe together (loop swoop and pull knot) the whole way around the blanket. Be careful not to pull too hard, you could stretch the fabric out and distort your blanket.

6. When all four sides are tied, your blanket is complete! Estimated time to complete - 1 hour. If you work on it with a friend, one can cut, while the other ties, and you can complete a blanket in about 30 minutes !
Don't forget to attach your prayer and membership to the finished "Prayer Blankie"
  1. Take your two pieces of fleece. Put one piece on top of the other lining up the edges so they are even. (one side will be the front and the other side will be the back of your blanket)

  2. Trim off any selvage around the edges of your fleece ( try not to cut in more than 2 inches) * Remember you need to try to cut straight, but it doesn't have to be.
  3. Take your piece of 4"x4" paper lay it on the corner of your blanket. Then cut out the corner through both layers. Proceed to do this on all four corners.
  4. Now you are ready to cut your fringes. Cut 4 inches into both fleeces at 1" wide. I found it easier to lay a tape measure across from the corner of the cut out corner to the other.
  5. Your fringes don't need to be 1" exactly, just try to keep them the same size.( You don't want to have one fringe 1" and the next one 2".)
Proceed to cut 1" intervals on all four sides.
  6. Starting on one side tie over hand knots (using one fringe from each fleece.) Tie these knots on every other fringe around the entire blanket.
  7. Then flip the whole blanket over and tie the remaining knots until your blanket is complete.(This helps your knotted ends look perfect)
  8. Some prefer to only tie one knot, but I like to double knot them. This helps them from coming untied especially in the wash.
